Twelve Under Ten

There are still good wine values to be found, and some of them are at the Princeton Corkscrew Wine Shop.  I am on their email list, and just received a list of a dozen wines for under $10 they are offering, along with enticing descriptions.  What a great opportunity to make up an assorted case of interesting and affordable finds – for yourself or as a really thoughtful gift.

For instance, you might try the Domaine du Pas Saint Martin “Pierres Frites” 2007, a white from Saumur, Loire Valley, France.  It is made with Chenin Blanc farmed 100% organically, on soils containing fossilized marine life that covered the region 10 million years ago.  A beautiful balance of fruit and acidty make this the perfect choice with light seafood or your favorite creamy cow’s milk cheese.

Or how about the Portuguese Adega de Pegões dry muscat 2007, a zesty and crisp white that’s a good match with sushi or spicy cuisine – a mere $7.50!

Seeing red?  Then try the Château Bellevue La Forêt Rouge 2005, a tasty blend from France’s newest appellation, the Fronton.  Deep aromatics of plums, boysenberry and licorice on the nose with a hint of black pepper mid-palate.  Great with cassoulet or duck breast.

Or maybe the Domaine Verdier-Logel Côtes du Forez 2006, “Cuvée des Gourmets,” from the Loire Valley of France, vineyards located on the foothills of the volcanic mountains where the soil has a granite and volcanic composition, imparting a rich earthy fragrance combined with elegant fruitiness.  enjoy with with a salade niçoise or a wild mushroom risotto.

The Corkscrew makes a point of finding interesting wines from passionate producers – generic mass market stuff need not apply!
