Edy’s Peppermint Cones

These just looked so good that I couldn’t resist sharing! I have to confess that when I do succumb to supermarket ice cream, Edy’s is often my choice. And I tend to like these seasonal, offbeat flavors best.  When I was a kid, my favorite ice cream was Ho Jo’s peppermint stick, which is probably … Continue reading

Artisanal Soy Sauce

I love it when someone reimagines a standby food product, making it special. Take soy sauce.  A very basic commodity that most of us take for granted, maybe looking for a lower-sodium version. But even the low-sodium is quite salty; my Japanese Marukin premium low salt soy sauce still has 460mg of sodium per tablespoon.  … Continue reading

Artichoke Ravioli and Roasted Squash

This was a hasty dinner one night, but a delicious one. I’d bought the artichoke ravioli at Trader Joe’s after tasing a sample in the store. I’m not a big ravioli person (the pasta is usually too thick), but this seemed pretty good, especially with the shaved parmesan on top, as served in store. I don’t … Continue reading

A Smarter Choice

Well, glory be, the Smart Choices program I recently posted about is bowing to pressure and more or less suspending operations.  In an article this morning in the New York Times, we learn that some of the food manufacturers who were participating are pulling out amid public and governmental pressure.  The program allowed certain products … Continue reading

Beijing-Style Noodles (Zhajiang Mian)

I really enjoyed reading Jen Lin-Liu’s “Serve the People, a stir-fried journey through China.” Of the recipes in the book, I’ve so far made the Beijing-style noodle dish you see at left, which the author made for her cooking school friend, Chairman Wang, when the woman injured her foot and was housebound.  It is noodles, … Continue reading

Mousse-alicious!

I’m in love.  This is reduced fat chocolate mousse from Whole Foods. It’s made from tofu, chocolate, and brown rice syrup (a low glycemic sweetener).  Until I added that dairy whipped cream, it was vegan, too. It is rich and smooth, with a little bit of crunchy chocolate here and there.  It is just delicious, and … Continue reading

Pies for Schools

This is the time of year that parents start planning school fundraisers, and sometimes that means pies and cheesecakes.  But instead of so-so products, how about something really good for a change, something local and wholesome, and something that people will purchase because they want to, not just out of obligation? Your school, I recently learned … Continue reading

Jackpot at Trader Joe’s!

What you see here is the tip of the iceberg, after my inaugural visit to Trader Joe’s Princeton.  I missed the early day mahem but checked Twitter and it seemed a huge crowd was there.  By the time I arrived around 3:30pm, you could actually snag a cart and move around a little in the store. … Continue reading

Flanken

Take a bow McCaffrey’s Market, Gillian’s Gourmet, Jade Asian Sauces, and FunniBonz.  McCaffrey’s for selling flanken ribs (short ribs cut across the bone), which can be hard to find (and they weren’t too expensive, either).  And to the others for making such tasty sauces. What’s more, Gillian’s and FunniBonz are local companies, often to be … Continue reading

My Trader Joe’s Shopping List

Brace yourself, Trader Joe’s is FINALLY opening on Friday at the The Square at West Windsor on Meadow Road (across Rte. 1 from Marketfair on the northbound side of Rte. 1).  Foodies rejoice! So, here’s what I’ll be looking for: Nuts – Trader Joe’s has a great nut “program” and their selection of dried fruits … Continue reading
