Salsa (and thoughts on crème fraîche)

I must think it’s summer, because I just could not resist buying watermelon the other day. I chunked some up for salsa, mixing it with chopped jalapeno, radish, scallion, and cilantro. I juiced half a lime into it with my grooved wooden thingy (the best!), and there you go, some wonderfully sassy salsa. I had mine … Continue reading

Vive la France!

You gotta love the French.  Their idea of convenience food is pretty great.  I found these pre-made chocolate filled crepes at Bon Appetit in the Princeton Shopping Center.  They had an apple version, too. The ingredients aren’t too bad – white flour, buckwheat flour, butter, oil (non-hydrogenated), chocolate, sugar, and hazelnut paste, basically.  No preservatives. The package … Continue reading

Welcome BT Bistro!

One of our area’s most popular chefs, Bobby Trigg, owner of the Ferry House in Princeton, opens his newest venture, BT Bistro, today.  Located in the Clarion Palmer Inn, at the corner of Emmons Drive and Route 1, the restaurant will be open for lunch weekdays, dinner daily, and Sunday brunch.  (Princetonians can access the … Continue reading

Best Kept Secret

For years, my family has been stopping by Heavenly Ham in Mercer Mall to pick up ham bones.  We love split pea soup, and the humongous bones sold from the freezer case here (for a mere $5.99, the last time I went) have so much meat left on them that you’ll have a bonus of … Continue reading

Outstanding! (or maybe sitting)

Foodies and other locavores will gather at Cherry Grove Farm in Lawrenceville on September 1 for a very special dinner en plein air – as in outdoors in a field.  The event is mounted by Outstanding In The Field, and is part of a moveable feast that matches local farmers and top chefs across the country each year. The … Continue reading

At Last!

Finally!  Trader Joe’s will open near Princeton this summer, at the mall on Meadow Road, across from Marketfair, on the northbound side of Rte. 1 (story in today’s Packet).  This is, I believe a location they’ve looked at before, and I just have to think that with the economic downturn, it is finally at the … Continue reading

5-Star Bars

I am so smitten with the Lake Champlain Chocolates 5-Star Chocolate bars.  This is my favorite, fruit and nuts enrobed in dark chocolate.  I’m not usually a fan of dark raisins, but don’t mind them here.  The website describes the bar as “Tart cherries, pecans, and raisins (unsulfured) in an all-natural hazelnut praline center, covered in dark … Continue reading

Tortoni!

I have loved Tortoni, the Italian frozen custard treat with a toasted almond topping, since childhood. It was my dessert of choice in any Chambersburg restaurant, when that was the Trenton hot spot for Italian food. It’s so hard to find now, I think the only place in recent memory where I’ve found it was at … Continue reading

Last Call to Fight Hunger with Taste

Monday night is Taste of the Nation, 6:00-9:00pm, at the Westin Hotel in Forrestal Village (corner of College Road and Rte. 1).  Don’t delay if you would like to attend this premier gourmet tasting event to benefit local organizations that fight childhood hunger.  I have been amazed at the support Taste has received this year. … Continue reading
